Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) uses a stationary, ground-based scanner — typically mounted on a tripod — that sweeps laser pulses across a full 360-degree field of view.
Each pulse measures the distance to a surface and records it as a point in 3D space.
The scanner is moved to multiple setup positions around and through the site, and the individual scans are then registered, or aligned, into a single point cloud.
Many scanners also capture panoramic photos, which are used to colorize the point cloud for a true-to-life view of the space.
How Terrestrial Scanning Differs from Aerial LiDAR
